Road to the Sun and...

August 13, 2017

Per Mark's suggestion we were picking up coffee and scones at 7 AM and on the road shortly thereafter.  It was an overcast, cool day but it didn't take away from the spectacular scenery.

However, blogspot has a mind of it's own so it loaded our photos from the Charles Marion Russell Museum in Great Falls, MT first...
Along with the artist Frederick Remington, CM Russell is one of my favorite Western themed artists. It turns out he made Montana his home, hence the museum here.

I like his sculptures as much as his 2D artwork

Russell inspired and befriended other artists during the same time period. It's fun and inspiring for me to see how other artists interpreted this beautiful land that we are seeing...

What made this museum for us was all that they included beside CM Russell's artworks and his artifacts...Including contemporary Native American artists' work...

They even included this intricate wood bar from the old Mint Saloon in Great Falls that featured CM Russell's work whose owner was a major collector of Russell's work.

The ranching industry out here fascinates us; since we have seen so many cattle herds in these wide open spaces...

Strand Ranch's owner was another major collector of Western art and generously donated much of his to this museum. Sculptor Jay Contway was one of his favorites.

We had to take this photo for Shirley, Mike's former administrative assistant and part-time barrel racer.

The Bison Exhibition was wonderful as well.

Since the sun didn't shine much it seems to me our photos have a more moody and serene feel...We were blessed in that it wasn't too crowded.

If the Blackfeet are going to let their cattle roam, they need to teach them to read signs...

How they can grow like this is beyond me???

As you can see, I fell in love with the high mountain flora

The glaciers for which this park was named are fast disappearing

As they melt, they give way to magnificent falls, streams and lakes

One was lovelier than the next...

Logan Pass Visitor's Center

We decided these cyclists were going faster than we were at times...

The sun kept trying to make an appearance

Yes, it was that green up there

I shot this out of the front window and yes, the walls were that close...I literally was using my imaginary passenger wheel and brake and praying lots...
I just kept saying, "I'm so glad you are driving!!!"

If you struggle with motion sickness or height issues, the Road to the Sun isn't for you!!!

This kid's joy summed up this trip for us!!!

"The Hills are alive with the Sound of Music..."

We would have been so disappointed had we not met more cows again...

Thanks to being back in cellphone range we were able to FaceTime with Mike, Katie and Elle Belle. What a treat!!! At almost 1 year,  she is learning and growing; so rapidly, keeping her parents very busy!!!
The past few nights accommodations have been less than perfect, making tonight's seemed like a dream. ...Big room and lots of modern conveniences, who knew??? Think we will sleep well...
